SHIMANO Ocea Jigger – Full Model Change!

It’s been 6 years since Ocea Jigger has been sold and been loved by lots of jigging anglers. And now, this SHIMANO’s flagship overhead reel has been fully model changed this year.

60% Decreasing of Reeling Resistance – Infinity Drive

SHIMANO official says this Infinity Drive reduces 60% of reeling resistance from old model – now what is the Infinity Drive?
One big update of the Infinity Drive is the mount type of pinion gear, says SHIMANO official. The ’11 Ocea Jigger holds the gear by bearing, but the new ’17 Ocea Jigger holds it from inside by spool shaft, and by this difference gains toughness, strength and smoothness of the reeling.
Second update is the drag sound system updated. A spring in ’11 Ocea Jigger has been removed and gained the handling smooothness.
Third update is by SHIMANO official, each parts update and the new ’17 Ocea Jigger reduced 60% of the reeling resistance.
Moreover, this new model also has micro module gear and this feature is mainly, getting good impression from Ocea Conquest and Engetsu – can’t wait to first touch.

Long Handle – No More Customising Needed!?

With ’11 Ocea Jigger, the handles are very short and therefore lots of people used to use custom long handle, especially for the deep sea jigging. In Australia, we sometimes need to use 250 – 300 g jig for 100m deep, so the normal handle was a bit too short and power-less.
Now the new ’17 Ocea Jigger has long crank handle by default. With 1500PG/HG handle length is 73/85mm, against 70mm with ’11 Ocea Jigger. This will for sure, make smoother and lighter feeling.

New Water Resistance X-Protect

This new ’17 Ocea Jigger has new water protect feature, X-Protect to drive gear side.

  1. I need help buying my 3rd shimano reel. Own the torium 14 and 16. Love them! Help me pair the right slow jigging reel to my new mstc634sf metal witch rod by palms. Looking at 1500hg, 1501 and 2000hg tring to figure out which would best balance out system. Rod is rated for PE4 power to be paired with pe4 line (comparable to, say, 40 lb test) the line I want is the japanese style 12 strand braid. Xan you help me get the right reel. Jim Mascaro 707 230 4692 cell. Entering my 1st tournament soon so time is a factor. Thx. Love your reels.

    1. We are so sorry for late reply Jim.
With your rod, it seems like a kind of heavy rod, so 2000HG could be the one to have balance with it.
With 1500 size PE4 is a bit too thick for the spool, which you may only be able to wind 200 – 250m.
      Good luck with your tounament!

    1. Yes of course, if you use Tenso.com.
If you send this over to Canada by Japan Post, the shipping fee is 2,200 – 2,500 JPY approx. by EMS.
If you use Tenso.com you will be charged service fee as well.

    1. Hi Vincent, well it depends on how deep you fish. If you just fish 20m deep or shallower, 10cm gap of retrieve won’t be different that much. Powerwise, if your target is not that big fish it won’t be much different. But if you are keen to deep sea fishing like 100m or more, that 10cm can make big difference, especially for jigging. If you target speed fish like kingfish the HG reeling speed can possibly make better results, depending on the case. So, if you do jigging with this, and do fast pitch jerk or faster reeling mainly, I would use HG. But if you just do bait fishing or slow jigging, that only requires slow pitch jerk / slow reeling mainly, PG might be your choice.
