Fishing Knot: How To Tie Jansik Special – Easy, Quick but Strong Knot

Here we introduce you how to fishing knot – very easy, quick but strong knot for mono to eye.

Originally brought from boating rope knotting but simpler than you may have already known.

Fishing Knot How-To

Step by step how-to

  1. Put your line end through to eye twice.
Hold still to keep the loop you made wide enough to place line inside at step 2.
  2. Bring the end over the top of the loop, so the top becomes double lines.
  3. Put the end through the loop you made at step 1-2, and wrap across 2 lines, twice.
  4. Tighten the knot by pulling the main line, and the end alternatively. Wet the line first, and tighten slowly to make the knot still and in perfect shape.
  5. If you want, make 4 times of half hitch alternatively from up and under, to protect the main line from scratching, then place end knot, which is 3 times wrapping version of half hitch.
Half-hitching more to make longer line protection if needed.

That is it. Very simple isn’t it?

Now this is very common in boating, and you may have already seen this Jansik Special Knot at other articles, but they use triple loop not double like this, don’t they?
Actually, Japanese articles just use double loop.
This movie explains why.

Double loop VS Triple loop

So what’s the difference in between Japanese version double loop and English version triple loop?
It sounds like triple loop could be stronger as there are one more loop, doesn’t it?

OK, let’s check it.
As the movie shows, I made double loop and triple loop Jansik Special with fluorocarbon #5 – 20lb line to a metal jig eye. The line itself has 9kg average.

In 5 times, double loop version cut from 7-8.5kg, average around 7.5kg. This means double loop version Jansik Special has 83% strength. Not bad huh?

Now tried triple loop version, and it was cut from 7-7.5kg. In 5 times, it actually did not go over 7.5kg. Interesting ins’t it? The extra line actually does not make the knot any stronger.

I assume this is because the line itself has crossing inside the knot and does not matter how many loops you make it is just cut by squashed from the crossing.

This means, you don’t really need to make one extra loop but double loop is enough.
When you become used to it, it can be done within 20sec but has more than 80% strength. Especially on the boat this can be very useful knot.

Just one thing, this cannot be used for braided line as the knot is slipped and only has around 50% strength. Only for mono, fluorocarbon lines.
